As tension continues over the death of Zubeen Garg, his manager Siddharth Sharma has finally spoke up today. He wrote an open letter through a Facebook post.
"Open Letter from Siddhartha Sharma
Assam has always been, and will always remain, my home. The people who gave me love, respect, and livelihood are now hurt, and I share their pain.
Silence can be misunderstood. Some people believe that if I do not speak or return immediately, it must mean I have done something wrong. That is why I am writing this letter. I want to tell everyone that I have nothing to hide. I am not running away. As soon as there is an assurance of my safety and a fair opportunity to present the facts, I will come to Guwahati and place my side before the SIT and before the people.
On 19 September 2025, while in Singapore for the North-East Festival, our elder brother, Zubeen da, met with a tragic accident while swimming. I was with him before and after the incident, tried everything to get him help, and then arranged to bring him home to India.
The media quickly began projecting me as a culprit, and I started receiving death threats, hate messages, and abuse. Friends and family urged me not to come to Guwahati, and I had to stay back in Delhi.
Losing him has left a hole in my heart that can never be filled. But what has shattered me even more is not being able to come with him, attend his rituals, and stand with the family. I am helpless and numb, as my whole world has changed.
Over the last week I have been shocked and saddened by the rumours, abuse, and threats that have spread online and on television. Some have accused me of negligence that day; others claimed I was hiding money or building businesses in Zubeen da’s name. Some have even said that I will become the owner of Zubeen da’s copyrights.
These allegations are entirely false. I have never misused his trust or his finances, and I am fully prepared to account for every rupee before the authorities and his family.
The truth is that most of the 38,000 songs recorded by him are owned entirely by other music labels and production houses. He himself never received money from them, apart from a few thousand rupees as one-time singing fees. Most of these songs, including almost all of his hit songs, were recorded before I was even present in his life. Zubeen da often told me how people had misused him — how, even after his songs earned crores of rupees, he never received any royalty from producers or music labels of Assam. Anyone can verify this by checking with those producers and labels directly.
In 2021, he wanted to at least retain ownership of some of his later works, and that is why Zubeen Garg Music LLP was formed. This is the first and only business we ever partnered in. We have released over 20 songs under this entity, with a total investment of about ₹10 lakhs, out of which Zubeen da invested ₹6 Lakhs.The revenue of these songs is only a few thousand every month. Every rupee goes into the company account, and no one has ever withdrawn a single penny. Zubeen da owned 60% of the LLP, and it will be my privilege to ensure that the remaining balance is also transferred to his family.
His royalties as a composer and lyricist come from IPRS goes directly to his account, and cannot go into anyone else’s account. After his demise, all of this will legally and rightfully pass to his wife.
It is extremely painful that people who used Zubeen da for their personal gain for years are now spreading falsehoods against me only to deflect blame and protect themselves.
The Assam government has already constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter, and, I welcome this. l want the truth to come out as much as anyone else. I will cooperate completely with the investigation and provide every detail that the authorities require.
I have not been able to return to Guwahati because, in the last few days, crowds have gathered outside my home, police vehicles have been attacked, and I have received thousands of death threats. The SIT had to break into my house as no family members were present. My mother and siblings have left for their safety. Friends, family, and well-wishers have advised me to stay away until the situation is calmer. I respect the law, but I am also frightened for my life and for the lives of those around me.
This is a request from one human being to another. Please let the investigation take its course without fear or prejudice. Do not fall for rumours or incitement on social media. We owe it to Zubeen da’s memory to seek the truth calmly and with dignity.
