Legendary flutist Deepak Sharma passes away

Another sad news for the people of the state. Legendary flutist Deepak Sharma passes away. The flute player had been undergoing treatment for a complicated liver ailment for a long time. Deepak Sharma breathed his last at 6.15 am while undergoing treatment in Chennai.  The legendary flutist passed away at the age of 57 at Rela Hospital in Chennai. Deepak Sharma was rushed to Chennai on October 21 for better treatment.

         Deepak Sharma was born on August 23, 1968 in Panigaon in Nalbari district. His father's name is late Pramod Sharma. The flute player was a resident of Ambikagiri Nagar in Guwahati. Deepak Sharma has been interested in music since childhood. After matriculation, he came to Guwahati to learn the flute. He learnt flute from Prabhat Sharma, a prominent flutist.

Deepak Sharma played the flute in several popular songs of Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg and composed music for 3 films. He rose to fame by composing music for films like Junki Panoi, Jatinga ityadi (2007) and Luitok vetibo kune (2013). Deepak Sharma was also the lead flutist for the music direction of Karma & Wazir which aired on Zee TV as well as the background score of Kaleidoscope, which aired on Star Plus. He won several awards for his work. Recently, Deepak Sharma was presented with the 'Zubeen Garg Award' for the year 2025. The untimely demise of the artist has cast a shadow of grief in the cultural circles of the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to express his condolences to the bereaved family. CM said, "Deeply anguished to learn about the untimely demise of eminent flutist Dipak Sarma, who has contributed immensely towards Assamese music and popularised flute as a musical instrument.
