Today is the festival of Mohoho

This festival is celebrated in the month of Aghon, as per Assamese calender. Especially in the lower parts of Assam ,the festival of Mohoho is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Aghon. It is prevalent in lower Assam, especially in the districts of Kamrup, Goalpara, Nalbari, Barpeta, Darrang and Baksa. 

The festival of Mohoho held in the month of Aghon is celebrated with joy by the village cowherds and young group of boys . In the evenings, they go into the courtyard of the people with 'tokon' or 'lathi' in their hands and sing a few songs. These songs are called moho-ho songs. People reward them with money and rice that's used to feast together.

Moh khedba tangun lou (মহ খেদবা টাঙোন লৌ)

Mohe bole mollu de (মহে বোলে মল্লুদে)

Tepol pura khalude (টেপল পুৰা খালুদে)

Tepolot nohol nun (টেপলত নহ'ল নুন)

Saul lage dun dun... (চাউল লাগে দোন দোন ...)

It is said that when these Mo-ho-ho songs are sung, the mosquitoes (Moh) go away in fear. The month of Aghon is a very important month for the farmers of Assam. It is during this time that the rice in the field is infested. Therefore, this festival is celebrated on the full moon night of the month of Aghon to get rid of mosquitoes and insects from the fields. People believe that mosquitoes gradually disappear after the Mohoho festival. It is after this day that farmers usually start threshing paddy.

         Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulating the people of Assam on social media and wrote: "Where our traditions run deep, Mohoho comes alive on the full-moon night of Aghun month.

Youth gather in the courtyards, singing lively verses to drive away negativity and invite prosperity. It is a night filled with rhythm, togetherness and the timeless memories of our elders.
