19 killed in clashes with police in Nepal; Home Minister resigns

Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigns. Lekhak submitted his resignation to Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli at a cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister's official residence in Baluatar on Monday.

On September 4, the Nepal government had banned 26 social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit and X. As a result GEN Z i.e. the new generation of children protested strongly against this move of the government. It is learnt that 19 people were killed and over 42 injured in clashes between protesters and police.

Protesters also reportedly entered Nepal's parliament despite police and administrative obstruction. Police fired tear gas shells and imposed curfew to control the situation. However, when the situation got out of control, the police opened fire, and 19 protesters were killed in the shooting. The Nepal government has banned these social media companies from doing business in Nepal with a number of conditions. These companies will have to open offices in Nepal and register with the government and appoint employees in Nepal to receive and redress grievances, only then will the ban be lifted, the government said.
