Today is Assam Day (Asom Divas)

Today is Assam Day. The people of Assam celebrate this day as 'Assam Day' or 'Sukapha Day'. On 2 December 1228, the Ahoms under the leadership of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom Empire, crossed the Patkai Mountains and entered the Souma sector. To commemorate this historic day, 'Assam Day' is celebrated every year since 2nd December 1996 in the memory of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha.

Various programmes are being organised in different parts of the state to commemorate the valour, wisdom and contribution of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha. Chief minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a special message on social media remembering Swargadeo Chaolung Chukapha. The Chief Minister also said that the establishment of Charaideo Sukaphaa University, which was announced by the state government in honour of Chaolung Sukapha, is a humble attempt to realise the foundation of Assam. Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya urged the people of the state to take inspiration from the ideals of the first Swargadeo of Assam on the occasion of 'Assam Day'.
